Reality and Myth conversation... Exam Nerves
As a very wise person ( Renzie Hanham) who works in the area of " Performance Under Pressure" says frequently
"This is a Reality and Myth conversation."
Reality is where we are... myth is where we want to be; how we want to be; where we think we need to be.
Where we get stuck, he says, is in the GAP between the two.
We become stuck when the focus of our thinking is on what is missing , or what we can't do, in order to achieve "the myth". Anxiety, procrastination, and avoidance can begin to invade our way of being.
We can lose the ability to see steps forward as part of the solution because the leap to the "myth" situation is overwhelming.
In order to move through the gap learning to be "comfortable being uncomfortable" can become a huge asset. Accepting where we are, enables us to create an achievable set of steps in front of us and move from our stuck thinking and begin the process of creating the bridge a block at a time.
We cannot predetermine an outcome, we can only influence how we respond to the process, to create movement for ourselves towards the desired goal or target.
Approaching the Google Educators Level 1 Exam is, for me, a challenge. The reality is that I possibly have a long way to go, before I am able to accomplish this, in the time available. The delight for me is in how far I have come and how easily I can map out what I will continue to work on in order to be the digitally fluent educator I know I can be.
Becoming "comfortable being uncomfortable", has become a marker of success for me, and through the challenges of constantly being presented with new information and opportunities, has brought me closer to understanding how it is for our learners. I will be a better teacher for having had this experience...
Google Educator Level 1, or not.
Totally agree with you Cath - comfortable being uncomfortable - putting ourselves in the learning pit, which is where some of our learners are for the majority of the time! How often do we discuss progress and say how we wish "Jack" would take a risk with his learning or have a growth mindset? We have all very firmly been in this place for the past term with DFI - best of luck with your journey and process - let us know how you get on!
ReplyDeleteKia ora Cath,
ReplyDeleteIt is has been great to share the DFI experience with you. I am so impressed with how you have reflected on your journey and reflected against that of a learner. I have learnt so much from you - including the gems of quotes that you drop - well done! Being comfortable being uncomfortable has really resonated with me. I am sure you have gained new skills and knowledge that you will be able to take forward into the classroom.
Keep up the awesome reflecting post DFI!
