DFI Session 3 Today's Reflections - Media

What a lot of valuable learning today that connects closely to where I am at as a learner on this journey.
The biggest take away from today, for me, is the validation that creating, in all its forms, powerfully engages students in learning and connects them to authentic audiences through many channels. As a New Entrant teacher, I see children come to school with a wealth of enthusiasm for playful learning. Often the transition to school has seen children's curiosity, creativity and spontaneity diminish but the Manaiakalani pedagogy brings the focus back to creating as being key for engaging and deepening children's learning.
I am keen to discus how others balance the expectations of management/ parents/ ourselves when designing environments that allow for the wide range in entry skills, language, independence and "readiness" while ensuring children can explore and engage in purposeful play to learn.

  1. Cath - yes I agree! Great to have creativity front and centre! It's always been a challenge to cater for the needs of such a diverse range of little learners in the New Entrant Year 1 area. Since working collaboratively this has become easier for us to manage with those needs being able to be catered for within the classroom programme, due to more teachers in the space. Happy to discuss further with you!

  2. Kia ora Cath,

It is great reading your reflections on DFI 3. It is exciting to see you delving into wider thinking regarding creativity and what is happening to your learners, or learners generally. Expectations from parents and management can constrain create, but often the things that students create are the ones that parents enjoy engaging with the most! Keep up the great reflecting. I am looking forward to working with you as we deal with data this week.

    Thanks,

    Latham
