DFI Week 2- Wow a lot of unexpected LEARNing!!!

Digital Fluency Intensive Week 2

Work flow /  LEARN session

"Access and engage with existing knowledge" in a digital environment - LEARN
I find I am learning to access a lot of new tools and pathways for managing both organisational and teaching components of my digital journey.
Personally engaging with existing knowledge today has been essential as I have had to work by myself using the slides as I was supporting my sick son in hospital. What an experience though as I got a first hand lesson in the impact of learning and working digitally. There is a lot of "down time" in an ED yet being connected in a limited way enabled me to feel supported to continue my learning in a self directed manner, which is what we want our learners to be able to do.
I consider often how the children must feel as learners; being challenged with new material, ways of making meaning, demanding expectations and fragile self belief. I am motivated and eager to learn ways to maximize my work efficiency so the sections on Google Keep, Taming tabs will definitely be helpful, when I can revisit them with a knowledgeable colleague on hand. This reminds me to give my young new entrant learners plenty of opportunity to engage in learning at their pace and with rewindable methods of delivery. We have no devices but the Teacher computer can be valuable for engaging learning opportunities that can be reviewed together. This will be my take away from today's personal drama and hopefully my experience will make me more aware of how it is for my learners.

  1. Kia ora Cath,

It was great to read your unique experience and reflections on DFI Day 2. I am hopeful that everything is ok with your son and your whānau. This experience has offered you a valuable insight into the power of ubiquitous learning. The ability to learn from any place at any time. The connections that you have made with your classroom practice are meaningful and I know you will have fun implementing new ways of working with your new entrants. Stay well and see you Friday.

  2. Kia ora Cath,

I'm so sorry to hear that you had to learn from your son's hospital sick bed. I hope that he is on the improve. I'm sure it made for a long and stressful time for you.

As Latham said, it is great that you were able to continue to learn, despite it not being 'in class'. Your reflections on how having it ubiquitous made it possible for you to keep learning is something that we hope every teacher gains an understanding of why that is so important for our learners, though ideally it wouldn't be the same hospital learning.

It is great that you are making connections, despite not having the devices in class. I know that as you and Jen reflect on the learning you are doing that your students will benefit.

    Kia kaha,
    Sharon
